Rio Zapa Bean

Sometimes referred to as the Hopi String Bean, the Rio Zape bean was found in ancient cliff ruins near here. It is lavender with dark cherry stripes.The texture is excellent and the flavor is said to contain hints of chocolate. It is recognized as an Ark of Taste variety. The vigorous bushes set lots of purple pods and will sometimes send out short runners, but the plant does not require support. However, I use wire hoops simply to keep the beans clean and off the ground and make it easier to cultivate and irrigate.
I also planted them late in the season and they still matured with no problem.
