West Indian Gherkin

Looking like something from another planet, these odd melons have a fresh sweet cucumber flavor and are wonderful sliced in salads. I think they would make fine pickles as well with their sweet, firm flesh. The plants are enormous - easily covering an 8 foot trellis and the fruit hangs on long stems like ornaments. We use them at about
2-3 inches as the small seeds are still soft at that stage. Later they are ofter used in stir-fry and chutney. Production is phenomenal through a long season beginning about 55 days from seed. These gherkins are truly one of the most unusual and wonderful fruits you can grow. A packet will contain about 30 seeds.
