This is the legendary and very rare Concho bean from Nambe. It was grown for hundreds of years and then nearly lost. Fortunately, Rose Trujillo planted some of the beans passed down from her mother and this is her seed. The beans are a leathery brown, slightly flattened and easily double in size when cooked. They have a robust flavor all their own and a buttery texture. The semi-vining plants are remarkably productive. Rose has harvested 20 pounds of dry beans from 60 foot of row. That is twice the production of any variety I know of. A packet will contain 50 of these amazing beans, enough to plant several rows. You can meet Rose and her family every Saturday at the Santa Fe Farmers Market where they bring chile, beans, salsa and all sorts of wonderful baked goods and preserves.
